在做项目的申请常见问题时，到网上去查申请书上对三个短文的字数要求，却发现新版本是这样的表述：
Note: This essay

2500 characters. You
must preview this section before
submitting to make sure all
of your text fits in the
space provided.
2500“字”，太多了吧？留的框只有半页，怎么装得下。
赶紧找旧版本，上面是这样的：

350字，这才可以。
为什么把“Words”改为“Characters”了，是不是错了？我赶紧去问我的美国同事。美国同事很淡定，说没有错。这个字不是那个字，不一样。
比如，“word”是一个字，但却是“4个”“character”，而“character”这个字却有“9个”“character”。因此一个“word”的“character”是有多有少的。由于所留空间实际上是以可容纳多少个“character”来确定的，如果有申请者老用由许多的字母组成的字，那所留的空间就装不下350个字了（大家做做乘法就知道了）。
进一步说，由于“character(书写或印刷)符号”不仅是一个字母算一个“character”，而且一个空格，一个标点都算一个“character”，所以也不能用“alphabet”来代替。
这样，用2500个“character”代替350个“word”就更科学了。其实你现在写350个“word”一般会没问题装得下的，即2500个“character”≈350个“word”。
但是，不要忘了，汉语的“字”翻译就成了“character”。
又长学问了。
