Where camels walked: Preserving Chinese history at
Moshikou
Alina Doodnath
Imagine strolling along a path once traversed by camels
transporting silks, spices, crafts and other goods, thou
sands of years ago.
Today, tourists and Chinese citizens alike can walk along that same
dragon-shaped path, known as Moshikou Avenue.
Now known as the Moshikou Historical and Cultural Reserve, the
Moshikou area was established in the Western Zhou Dynasty and was
celebrated in the Ming and Qing dynasties, with an ancient Camel
Bell Road leading from the capital to the rest of the country and
the outside world.
Also located in the Moshikou Historical and Cultural Reserve are
two State Protected Historic Sites: Fahai Temple and Cheng’en
Temple.
The murals of Fahai Temple are works of art similar to the European
Renaissance, while the plaque of Cheng’en Temple was vouchsafed by
Emperor Zhengde of the Ming Dynasty. The murals, watchtower, bell
and drum tower, herringman cypress and mounting stone are
mystically exalted.
The village was supplied with electricity in 1923 by the Beijing
Huashang Electric Co., Ltd. (the predecessor of State Grid Beijing
Electric Power Company) which greatly aided the area's development.
According to records the village then became known as Moshikou,
carrying the meaning of a model for all villages.
In addition, there are 17 district-level cultural protection units
and 37 valuable courtyards. There are 1,556 households registered
in the Area, with about 10,000 permanent residents and a floating
population. The total construction area is about 180,000 square
meters.
In 2016, Shijingshan District Party Committee and the district
government started the protection, repair and renovation of the
Moshikou Historic Conservation Area.
The renovated site was opened in October 2021 to much acclaim - at
the end of November 2021, it was rated as one of the top ten 'Most
Beautiful Streets and Alleys in Beijing'.
In 2022, it won the award of 'Best Practice of Beijing Urban
Renewal' in the first Beijing Urban Renewal Forum.
On September 18, 2022, the Operation and Maintenance Management
Center of Moshikou Historic Conservation Area was formally
established and dispatched to perform management duties.
The village also features a range of shops offering souvenirs and
other items for sale, as well as cafes, restaurants and more.
The Moshikou Historical and Cultural Reserve is open to visitors
and is about 40 minutes away from downtown Beijing by car.
