英诗汉译_6 He Wishes for the Cloths of Heaven by W. B. Yeats

获得诺贝尔文学奖的爱尔兰著名诗人叶芝有一首短诗，题为He Wishes for the Cloths of Heaven。国内有多个汉译本，大都把当中的the Cloths of Heaven翻译成“天国的锦缎”、“天堂中的锦绣”、“天上锦织”或者“天衣”。但笔者认为，从全诗来看，此处的标题应该解释为“天神的绣袍”才符合原诗的意思。

一、原诗与译稿

He Wishes for the Cloths of Heaven

Had I the heavens’ embroidered cloths,
Inwrought with golden and silver light,
The blue and the dim and the dark cloths
Of night and light and the half-light,
I would spread the cloths under your feet:
But I, being poor, have o
nly my dreams;
I have spread my dreams under your feet;
Tread softly because you tread upon my dreams.

二、原诗词汇与句型难点解析以及翻译理据
1、 题目翻译为“他祈求众天神的袍服”，是根据第一行Had I the heavens' embroidered cloths的heavens以及cloths这两个词解析之后做出的翻译。
2、 American Heritage Dictionary (AHD) 在heaven词条下，把heavens作为一个义项收录，给出的释义是：The celestial powers; the gods. Often used in the plural: The heavens favored the young prince. 据此，第一行the heavens' embroidered cloths中的heavens可以说是The celestial powers; the gods（“众天神”）的意思；同样，AHD在cloth词条下给出的一个义项是The characteristic attire of a profession, especially that of the clergy，因此可以把the heavens' embroidered cloths理解为天神的绣袍。诗人祈求众天神的袍服，不是用来自己穿，而是用来铺在所爱的人的脚下，更容易让读者理解。
3、 第三行The blue and the dim and the dark cloths描述了众天神的绣袍的颜色。在翻译这些描述绣袍颜色的词汇时，简明贴切的词汇可能是：蓝色、浅色和深色。为了加强修辞效果，可略作加工：湛蓝、浅灰和深黑。
4、 说I would spread the cloths under your feet时，the cloths应该是指他拥有的全部袍服，而不是一件衣裳、那锦缎或者那块锦绣。“cloths”是复数，不是一件衣裳或者一块锦缎，而是多件；把自己的绣袍全都铺在对方脚下，比起仅仅把一件衣裳、或者一块锦缎或锦绣铺在对方脚下，更为浪漫。英语特有的这种屈折语的细腻表达在译文中应翻译出来，才能传达原诗的魅力和感染力。（顺便说一句，倒数第二行的现在完成时态如何翻译为好，用“已经做”还是用“将做”表达，同样值得探讨。但详细探讨这类问题已远远超出本文范围了。）
5、 与“half-light”（The soft, subdued light seen at dusk or dawn or in dimly lit interiors.）一词对应的汉语词汇可以是“霞”（日出或日落时天空云层因受日光斜射而呈现的光彩），所以，根据上下文将它翻译为“霞光”。

国内有很多专门研究叶芝的学者，当代的有傅浩先生，裘小龙先生等，早期的有施蛰存先生，先后出版过叶芝诗集的翻译本以及研究专著，网联网上很容易找到许多相关资料。
