Lillet (French pronunciation: [li'le])is
a brand of French aperitif wine from Podensac, a small village
south ofBordeaux.In1872, the brothers Paul and Raymond
Lillet, distillers and merchants of winesand spirits, founded their
company La Maison Lillet in this village. Itis a blend of
85% Bordeaux region wines (Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc for
theBlanc and Merlot and Cabernet Franc for the Rosé and the Rouge)
and 15%macerated liqueurs handcrafted on site, mostly citrus
liqueurs (peels of sweetoranges from Spain and Morocco and peels of
bitter green oranges from Haiti)and a Cinchona bark from Peru
liqueur which contains quinine. The mix is thenstirred in oak vats
until perfectly blended. During the ageing process, Lilletis
handled as attentively as any great Bordeaux wine (undergoing
fining,racking, filtering etc.). “Lillet” belongs to a family of
aperitifs known astonic wines because of the addition of a liqueur
of Cinchona.
