这两句话出自《论语·学而》,大意是说学习而后时不时地练习,不一样是很令人自得其乐吗?有同道从远方来,可以互相交流共同进步不一样是很令人拍手称快吗?
辜老先生的翻译是将其意思进行了解释,可以说是比起translation,更像paraphrase。不可否认,辜老先生对原文的理解十分透彻,这决定了他的用词的准确性。比如第一句中的“indeed”,十分贴合原文的意思。还有 “congenial”一词将意趣相投很好地表达出来,是对原文中“君子”的较好解释。“a greater pleasure”加上“still”用一个递进的关系来展现后者给人带来的更大的喜悦。层次分明,条理清晰。但是,原文的特色是反问句,这点在辜老先生的翻译中完全没有体现。
