A- Allmotor transportation abandoned.
B- Chinesemet Japanese forces which had come by motors from
Mogaung. When this occurred,General Tu was marching his troops to
China via Maingkwan and Putao (FortHertz). This encounter forced
his to march for Shingbwiyang.
From Indaw to Singkaling Hkamti sufficientfood was bought from
local people and no shortage existed.
C- thisis first point at which Chinese met great difficulties
due to lack of trails, bridges, and excessive rains. After the ten
to fourteen days rations taken fromSingkaling Hkamti were exhausted
there were no means of replenishment. Thetroops were without food
for many days except for bark roots and grass. Finally, they cut a
path through the jungle, established radio contact withC.E.F. Hqrs.
At Dibrugarh, and were located and fed by the U.S. Air Corps.
D- Chinese22nd Divisions completely marooned in village by
suddenly rising flood waters. They got out by using numerous small
rafts.
The route between Taro and Shingbwiyang hadpreviously been
traveled by the 96th Division. Many corpses were on the route.A
British Liaison Officer estimated about ninety per mile. The
soldiers of thisdivision were unquestionably guilty of murder,
robbery of civilian refugees, and looting in the Shingbwiyang
area.
E——-Delay of three to four dayscaused by inability to cross
Taga River here. While the British were trying toget a breeches
buoy and steel cable up from Calcutta by rail, the Chinese builta
bamboo bridge and crossed.
E—— Seperation of Chinese and British troops. The British stated
this new route (much more difficult was necessary because
ofdeseased corpses, on the route then in use, and deep mud. The
real reason wasunquestionably to protect the British refugees from
the Chinese soldiers. Inview of the conduct of the 96th Division
and the Chinese soldiers in theShingbwiyang Area, this was a wise
precaution. The Chinese were prohibited fromentering the native
villages of Nagas on the route.
Dates on map refer to main body of 22ndDivision and were
provided by the Division Commander. The 5th Army Headquartersand
special troops, reinforced by the 65th Regt. (less one Bn.)
generallypreceeded them by four to five days.
