在兄妹节这一天，姐妹们要在自己的兄弟们手腕上系上叫做“Rakhi”的护身符。而兄弟要承诺保护自己的姐妹，并赠送礼物作为答谢。
兄妹节也是唯一印度独立运动时期的节日。当孟加拉因为宗教原因而即将分离的时候，泰戈尔呼吁印度教徒和穆斯林教徒互相在手腕上系上“Rakhi”以示团结。
