地铁老祖宗的英文名叫啥？

近年来，地铁已成大都市(metropolitan)人们，特别是年轻人城内出行的首选方式。“世界媒体艺术之都”长沙于2021年4月27日推出的国内首座地铁数字艺术馆更是助力长沙

地铁变成了一种新的旅游景观，众媒体争先恐后对此报道。笔者倒是对《中国日报网》英文版2021年4月30日刊载的一篇题为“Changsha Subway Digital Art Museum becomes new top destination”(长沙地铁数字艺术馆成为新的主要旅游打卡地)的文章情有独钟。该文标题将地铁称为“subway”，而该文所配发的33秒钟的短视频汉英文主题为“长沙地铁数字艺术馆/CHANGSHA METRO DITITAL ART SPACE”。也是说，地铁的另一个英文名是“metro”。一直以来，人们对地铁的英文名究竟是哪一个而争论不休。其实，地铁的英文名确实不止一个。那么，全世界地铁老祖宗的英文名到底叫啥呢？
一．地铁老祖宗的英文名叫underground
“Welcome to the London Underground, or as it is usually known, the tube. It has the distinction of being the oldest and most complex underground system in the world. Rail services to London were first developed during the first half of the 19th century. However,most trains to London only went to the outer city limits, because building railway tracks into the city would have damaged many old buildings. Horse-drawn buses, trams, cabs and carriages were used to convey people to and around the city centre. Unfortunately, the number of vehicles on the road caused unbelievable traffic jams, and the roads became so busy that no one could travel anywhere. This traffic problem led to the development of the underground system.” (欢迎来到伦敦地铁——通常它被称为“管子”。伦敦地铁是世界上最古老且最复杂的地铁系统，并因此而享有盛名。早在19世纪上半叶就首次有了通往伦敦的铁路交通服务。但大部分通往伦敦的火车只到外伦敦的边界，因为在市区修建铁路会损坏许多古建筑。用马拉的公共汽车、有轨电车、出租车和四轮马车被用来送人们到市中心和周围地区。不幸的是，路上车辆的数量造成了难以置信的交通堵塞，道路交通变得如此拥挤以至于任何地方都无人能够通行。这一交通问题导致了地铁系统的研发。)
上面这段英文源自《牛津高中英语》教材模块七第4单元“Reading”板块、题为“The first underground in the world”这篇阅读文章的第一段。该书经全国中小学教材审定委员会2005年初审通过，使用至今，其作者分别是英国的Deborah Aldred，澳大利亚的Gabrielle Duigu和美国的Kelly Fried。书中英语材料真实、地道、优美，其权威性更是不用质疑。仔细观读后发现：若将该文的标题包括在内，“underground”一词在全篇文章中共计出现了20次，下文转摘源自文中16例与“underground”有关的表述。
1. the first underground第一条地铁(标题部分)
2. the London Underground伦敦地铁
3. the oldest and most complex underground system最古老和最复杂的地铁系统
4. the development of the underground system地铁系统的研发
5. an underground railway一条地铁
6. the next section of underground system地铁下一段/延续段/延长段系统

基于以上实例，以及伦敦地铁是世界上第一条地铁等理由，人们可以充分相信：全世界地铁的老祖宗(伦敦地铁)的权威英文名就是underground。
二．地铁其它英文名清单
因为地铁的英文名字有多种叫法，这恐怕就是人们长期以来不断探究地铁英文名的主要原因之一。称呼地铁的主要英文名如下：
1. tube
回读上文那段英文开头：“Welcome to the London Underground, or as it is usually known, the tube.”(欢迎来到伦敦地铁——通常它被称为“管子”), 因而这里的“the tube”就是“地铁”的别称，而且更加形象、生动。根据A S Hornby(霍恩比)原著的“Oxford Advanced Learner’s English-Chinese Dictionary(牛津高阶英汉双解词典)”，关于“tube”的第六条清单是：“Underground Railway 地下铁道6 the tube[sing](BrE) the underground railway system in London伦敦地下铁道：a tube station/train 地铁车站/列车° We came by tube. 我们乘地铁来的。”
无独有偶，欧文·沃森(Owen Watson)编写的《朗文现代英语词典》(Longman Modern English Dictionary)将“tube”解析为“(Br.) the underground railway”。tube是英国英语对地铁的另一种称呼。笔者先后四次到过伦敦，特意向多位伦敦市民询问过地铁之事，大多都将地铁说成“underground”, 当然也有人简称之为“tube”。
2. subway
查阅戴尔出版有限公司(Dell Publishing Co.,INC.)1970年8月首次出版的全英文《美国传统词典》(The American Heritage Dictionary)，也有关于“tube”的录载(见该词典p741)，其中的条目4是将“tube”解析为“A subway”。当然，该词典第691页也有专门“subway”一词的条目，其描述为：“An underground urban railway, usually operated by electricity”(一种地下城市铁路，通常由电力驱动)。其实，subway在美国英语中就是“地铁”的一种常见称呼，专门用来指市区的地下铁道。因而谈及地铁时，大多美国人都会用subway。北京地铁一号线是中国最早的地铁线，“北京地铁”的翻译是“Beijing Subway”。此外，其它主要采用subway一词的城市还有：Yokohama Subway日本横滨地铁，Incheon Subway韩国仁川地铁，以及Seoul Metropolitan Subway首尔地铁等。当然，首尔地铁的另一个英文名是Seoul Metro。
3. metro
metro一词至少有两个含义，一是“大都市/大城市”；二是“地铁”。根据英语词源词典，metro是metropolitan的缩写形式。不过，metropolitan并非土生土长的英文词，而是源自法语chemin de fer métropolitain(地铁)。métro就是称呼地铁一种口语化的说法。例如：Je prends le métro tous les jours.(我每天乘坐地铁上下班)。因此，métro一词广泛用于法国巴黎和加拿大蒙特利尔等地的地铁称呼。如：Paris Métro巴黎地铁。因其书写简短、容易入口，中国大陆地区多个城市的地铁英文翻译采用metro。如：上海地铁Shanghai Metro，广州地铁Guangzhou Metro，深圳地铁Shenzhen Metro，天津地铁Tianjin Metro，长沙地铁Changsha Metro等。世界其它地区使用该词的还有：东京地铁Tokyo Metro，雅典地铁Athens Metro(Αττικ Μετρ/Attiko Metro)以及Pyongyang Metro(平壤地铁) 等。
地铁英文名除了用上述词表述外，还有railway，tunnel, transit，train等一些其它说法。例如：中国香港地铁MTR (Mass Transit Railway), 土耳其伊斯坦布尔地铁Tünel/Istanbul Tunel, 中国台北大众捷运系统Taipei Rapid Transit System/Metro Taipei/MRT, 天津地铁9号线(津滨轻轨)Tianjin Binhai Mass Transit, 柏林地铁BerlinU-Bahn/ Untergrundbahn/Underground railway, Berlin S-Bahn, 上海磁悬浮铁路(西起上海地铁2号线龙阳路站，东至浦东国际机场)Shanghai Maglev Train。
