Etiquette and
Ethics
The key term in the Confucian philosophy of
ancient China is 'li': the etiquettes. Co
nfucius holds that the proper performance of etiquettes is the key
to social order and indeed to human happiness. We must execute the
etiquettes exactly in the correct way, but also with perfect
sincerity and perfect spontaneity.
Etiquette is a generally accepted mode of
conduct. Etiquette takes as its essence being strict with oneself
and showing respect for others. For example, dining etiquette
facilitates people eating in a group without giving offense to one
another. (1) (You wouldn't eat with your elbows on the table or
talk with your mouth full of food).
Job search etiquette enables people who are
essentially strangers to explore the possibility of entering into a
mutually beneficial business relationship. (2) A violation of
etiquette could strain feelings and raise questions about behavior
that interfere with examining the overall fit between the job
applicant and the job.
Sometimes etiquette would not seem to play an
important part in our life, and yet no man can ever tell when its
knowledge may be of advantage, or its lack may turn the scale
against him. (3)
Ethics is a search for the good or right way to do things.
Ethics teaches that some values may transcend your personal best
interests. Because of ethics, you may need to sacrifice some
benefit simply because the legitimate interests of another party
need to be taken into account.
For example, accepting a job offer as a safety valve while
continuing to pursue other employment options might be in your
personal interest. However, doing so would be a violation of ethics
because that practice causes harm to others.
Manners are made up of trivialities of deportment which can
be easily learned if one does not happen to know them; manners are
personality—the outward manifestation of one’s innate character and
attitude toward life.
One who has good manners is
un-self-conscious in the observance of etiquette. The precepts of
etiquette must be so thoroughly absorbed as to make their
observance a matter of instinct rather than of conscious obedience.
(4)
Etiquette must include ethics as well as manners.
Certainly what one really is, is of far greater importance than
what one appears to be. A knowledge of etiquette is of course
essential to one’s decent behavior, just as clothing is
essential to one’s decent appearance.

NOTES
1.
…dining etiquette facilitates people eating in a group
without giving offense to one another.
eating(“人们进餐”,而不是“进餐的人们”)。
2.
Job search etiquette enables people who are essentially
strangers to explore the possibility of entering into a mutually
beneficial business relationship.
The bird’s large
wings enable it to fly very fast.
3.
… its knowledge
may be of advantage, or its lack may turn the scale against
him.
scale
scale in one’s favor正好相反。比如:The arrival
of the enemy reinforcement turned the scale against us.
The evidence
turned the scale in the prisoner’s favor.
4.
The precepts …as to make their observance a matter of
instinct rather than of conscious obedience.
instinct和(a
matter)of conscious
obedience。 He ran rather
than walked.
It wan what he meant
rather than what he said.
