有一次我坐在溪流旁，饶有兴致地
看着一个孩子戏水，陶醉其间。
不远处的橡树和榛树丛中传出
乌鸫圆润、画眉尖锐的鸣啭
难觅其踪。从萧索的艾蒿
飘来阵阵甜蜜如蜂巢的气味。

一只蝴蝶翩翩飞落在被车马无数次碾压
踢踏的石头上。不仅从高处也从身下

蝴蝶吸附着源自太阳的热量。
它惬意地栖息在炎热的石头上，

仿佛不会再有车马又一次经过
那条路；仿佛我是人类的最后一个，

它是昆虫中最初一只，一起沐浴着
地球和太阳的恩泽——我们赖以生存。
蝴蝶和溪流折射的微光吸引着我，
小溪欢快地流动着，传出天籁之声
刷刷声中激起的水花翻滚着涌过砾石
亘古以来川流不息

我坐着，篱笆上一只灰鹟默默地
停立，恍惚我们一直都在那里，
自从银蹄宝马载着骑士最后一次
在丘陵上驰骋（他们早已在冷杉掩映
人迹罕至的古冢之下安息）。
物我俱忘、今夕何夕？

眼前的景象、天籁声美不胜收。
孩子的喊声惊起了死者；
“莫不是误入桃花源”她说，那也是
我当时的感触，如梦似幻难以言表。

爱德华·托马斯（1878-1917），英国著名诗人。托马斯在文学创作中成名较早，与四次斩获普利策诗奖美国著名诗人弗罗斯特有一段诗坛佳话。一生中共创作144首诗歌；全部创作于他生命的最后三年。托马斯英年早逝，在一战结束前夕阵亡。

Seated once by a brook, watching a child
Chiefly that paddled, I wasthus beguiled.
Mellow theblackbird sang and sharp the thrush
Not far off inoak and hazel brush,
Unseen. Therewas a scent like honeycomb
From mugwortdull. And down upon the dome
Of the stone the cart-horse kicks against so oft
A butterflyalighted. From aloft
He took the heatof the sun, and from below.
On the hot stonehe perched contented so,
As if never acart would pass again
That way; as ifI were the last of men
And he the firstof insects to have earth
And sun togetherand to know their worth.
I was dividedbetween him and the gleam,
The motion, andthe voices, of the stream,
The waters running frizzled over gravel,
That nevervanish and for ever travel.
A greyflycatcher silent on a fence
And I sat as ifwe had been there since
The horseman andthe horse lying beneath
Thefir-tree-covered barrow on the heath,
The horseman andthe horse with silver shoes,
Galloped thedowns last. All that I could lose
I lost. And then thechild's voice raised the dead.
'No one's beenhere before' was what she said
And what I felt,yet never should have found
